North Sydney Smallbore Rifle Club Check out their own web site http://www.northsydneysmallbore.org.au Welcome to target rifle shooting - one of the most non-violent, non-ageist, non-racist, non-gender-specific and downright safest sports in the world. We're so politically correct we astound ourselves! But seriously.... What do we do? Smallbore rifle shooting has a long competitive history. It is one of the oldest of the modern Olympic sports; it is also included in the Commonwealth Games, and in the World Championships conducted by the International Shooting Sports Federation (ISSF). Within Australia there are state and national championships and, for those of more advanced years, smallbore shooting is also featured in the Masters Games programme. For more details on smallbore shooting in Australia, see the Target Rifle Australia website. At the elite level separate events are conducted for men and for women, but at more normal levels competition is completely open. Most of our club shooting concentrates on the prone 50-metre match; we also provide competition and practice for field rifle, but again primarily from the prone position. In addition to the smallbore rifle events, our club also caters for 300m Rifle, which is also a World Championship discipline. Coaching is available, but you do not need to have Olympic aspirations to enjoy shooting or membership of our club. Everyone is welcome. Does it hurt? Not unless you drop a rifle on your foot! A smallbore target rifle weighs about 5 to 6 kg and fires a single 5.56 mm rimfire cartridge (.22 Long Rifle in non-metric terms). There is hardly any recoil. As with all forms of target shooting, safety rules are strictly enforced. When do we do it? We hold regular practice shoots each Tuesday and Friday from 7:30 pm. There is frequent opportunity to compete in matches throughout Sydney and interstate. Where do we do it? Our range is on the Hornsby Rifle Range complex. Access is from Marcus Clark Way, off Rosamond St, Hornsby (alongside Mt Wilga Hospital); the UBD map reference is 133 E12, or 191 E12 in Gregory's. Will it break my budget? Costs can be quite low as our club has equipment and rifles available for members' use. Ammunition is available for sale at the club, and rifles and gear can be purchased through our state association at a discount. Legal requirements The legal requirements for licensing and firearms safety training are conducted by our club officials on an individual basis. How can I find out more?
